ELECTRIC
GO- KART 2007

WINNERS OF THE RENEWABLE ENERGY CAR RACE
IN CAIRO ON JUNE 2ND 2007

Last year’s Go-Kart project was such a great success that I decided to build another electric car this year.

Starting in February 2007, my physics students (all grade 12 students) worked a total of 15 days (school days & weekends) to build a three-wheeled vehicle running entirely on electric batteries rechargeable by solar panels. The goal this year was to build something better, faster and more efficient than the Go-Kart
built by students last year.

Hydrogen fueled car was again discussed this year, but put aside due to the high cost of material. The idea behind the three wheel model was to reduce friction and design an efficient steering system.

Four months later & dozens of solved problems later, the car was finally ready!!

It achieved an average velocity of 35 km/h when the battery was fully charged, but could only travel a distance of 7 km autonomously.

The highlight of the project is without any doubt the winning of the renewable energy car race in Cairo on June 2 nd 2007, where our car competed against 2 other schools. Our car completed a
technical 300-meter circuit in 29.6 seconds!

My students won a cash price of 1000LE (180$US), which was donated to the foundation of Cancer Research in Cairo.

The cost of building the car was about 900$US. This money was donated by the Parent Council of the International School of Egypt.
I thank them very much.
