Cycling in Europe

(Continued from Serbia) I left Serbia with a slight pang in my heart. After cycling nearly 1800 km, I briefly entered Bulgaria for about 25km before officially crossing into Romania at Calafat. I then spent the next two days riding to Craiova.  I really liked Craiova as a city. The pedestrian streets in the city center were beautiful. It was also during the semifinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, so the bars and restaurants were packed that evening. Nevertheless, the ride into the city (especially the last 20 km) was dangerous because of the heavy traffic, and I was roasting in temperatures above 35°C.

I took the train from Craiova to Bucharest and then continued on to Brașov, where I spent three days cycling through beautiful Saxon villages and visiting fortified churches. I especially liked the one in Hărman. And no, I didn't visit Dracula's Castle in Bran. It was so crowded with thousands of tourists and street after street of souvenir shops that it completely took away the sense of peace I had been hoping to find.

I took the train back to Bucharest, where I spent my last 3 nights before flying back to Athens. I have to say that I really enjoyed Bucharest. I took a free walking tour and visited the Museum of Communism. I especially liked the French Renaissance-style architecture, the excellent coffee shops, and Calea Victoriei, which is closed to traffic on weekends and becomes a lively pedestrian street.
