This was probably our last visit to this incredible island of 1500 habitants. We visited Saba 4 times over our two years in St.Maarten (click on left menu to see more pictures) and it is by far one of our favorite islands in the region. No beaches, no casino, no resorts like St.Marteen, but amazing hiking trails with pure, true wilderness.
We stayed for four days at The Ecolodge and again, I can only speak highly of the eco-friendly cottages (all powered by solar panels) and the phenomenal
food served at their restaurant.
This time, we hiked to Windward Side, The Bottom (capital), to the top of Mt.Scenery (it was cloudy as always) and did the entire Sandy Cruz trail (see map of trails). Everyday, we would hike for 2-4 hours in the morning and we were the only humans for miles around. We did not see anyone on the trails for 4 days
(to the exception on the Mt. Scenery trail).
Snakes, tree frogs, butterflies, bees, wild goats, snails, hermit crabs, wild chickens, hummingbirds, banana trees, mango trees, etc. Everyday, there was another natural surprise waiting for us. Alixe loved to see all these animals, insects and plants.
We stopped at (the only) Chinese bar at The Bottom –the capital-, and it was somewhat depressing to see these people at the bar drinking their boredom away. Saba is a tiny island, more like a tiny village lost in the middle of the Caribbean… You need to have a special character to live here as there is no cinema, no museum, no art scene, no stadium, no clubs, no major attractions… The hiking trails are phenomenal, but after a while, I guess you get bored… very bored.
We hiked to some tide pools close to the airport, and this was our last hike of the weekend, minutes before our flight departed back to SXM. Another relaxing, amazing weekend. The only way to visit Saba is by boat or plane from St.Maarten. I would definitively recommend the plane as the sea can be very rough, even on calm days. |
