PORTLAND & LINCOLN CITY
OREGON
August 12th to 21st 2011

We spend two days in Portland for Alixe’s birthday.  We visited the children’s museum and spent 2 hour in a Toy’s R Us!  We stayed at the Youth Hostel Northwest and tasted some amazing beers in local breweries (Portland is known for its dozens of local breweries).  I was really happy to see that breweries in Portland are very family friendly.  We sample good beers at the Rogue and Bridgeport Breweries.

Portland is a real neat city that I would love to live in.  It is environmentally friendly with more Prius cars than in Canada, amazing bicycle paths all over the city, green shady streets, more bicycle shops than in any city I know, and a huge variety of organic, locally grown stuff. We left Portland and drove to Lincoln City on the Oregon coast.

We stayed at ‘’By the Waves Inn’’ in Li ncoln city, a family run business with 4 tidy condos for rent.  Most nights, the owner Doug brought us fresh crab fished directly from the ocean in front of the condo.  The weather was nice and the breeze almost chilly.  It was fabulous to run 5km every morning on the beach (the beach is at least 20km long).

We came back to Portland a second time and stayed with Cynthia’s former student that she taught in Trinidad many years ago.  We went to more local breweries and visited the rose garden with phenomenal views of Mt Hood. We went to the Voodoo Doughnut shop, making the craziest, tastiest, freshest doughnuts you have ever tasted!  What about a maple syrup & bacon doughnut?  Cynthia loved it!  Sadly, I realized that for the first time, I was gaining weight on this trip…

We left Portland for good and visited Mt St Helens, famous for its 1980 eruption.  The 115km (no civilization) road leading to the mountain was spectacular with view points getting better as you got closer to
Mt. St Helens.  We spent more than 3 hours at the Johnston observatory and spent the night at the Kid Valley campground. See pictures here.
